Starbury is good for basketball

January 04, 2009 By: vincent Category: Knicks, News, Celtics

“Going to Boston would be great for basketball and for fans to see Kevin and I reunited, like when we were younger.” - Stephon Marbury.

I decided I was going to come up with a list of reasons why this would be good for basketball or the Celtics. Let’s begin…

1. He’s Starbury, anything he does is good for basketball

2. He has the ability to single-handedly pick teams apart (even his own team!)

3. He can show KG what it means to play your heart out and leave it all on the court

4. His leadership skills are unmatched, and we all know that the Celts are in desperate need of a leader

5. His presence will propel them to the top of the league

6. Glen Davis is a sissy, and they need that harder edge

7. Nobody playing for Boston has a sweet head tattoo

8. He is dependable and willing to do whatever it takes to win.

9.When his number is called, you don’t have to worry about him acting like a complete asshole and refusing to go into a game, and then saying that he wants to play for the team.

10. Even though he is 31 years young, he is still coachable.

Celtics, do the smart thing, and pick him up as soon as he reaches a buy-out for his contract.

Turkey Day Picks

November 27, 2008 By: chris Category: Magic, Hornets, Nuggets, Wizards, Picks

Happy Thanksgiving Interweb!  Another year, another round of Turkey Day Match-ups.  Let’s get into em.

 Magic @ Wizards

I’ll take the Magic.  Eventhough they played down to the wire last night, I just can’t help but like their team after such an emotional win.  Look for Dwight Howard to have a monster game against the Wizards interior.

Hornets @ Nuggets

I’ll take the Nuggets. Chaunce will be pretty effective slowing CP3 and the Hornets fast break will be non-existent. Melo will have a huge game and the Nuggets will run all over the bugs.

There you have it.  Magic and Nuggets.  Word is bond.  Enjoy the games and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Yah-ming! Holla back!

November 26, 2008 By: chris Category: Rockets, Fun

Of all the things said about Ron Artest, what is rarely said about him is how entertaining he can be.  The proof is in the video blogs he’s doing for hiphopgame.com.  Check out what he says about a recent Rockets loss and all sort of random stuff.  Basically, he says his team played like garbage, calls him Yah-ming, his ringtone is a dog barking, and he yells at his masseuse. Pure entertainment.  Keep it up Ron Ron.  Keep reppin’ for the streets.

Open Season

November 16, 2008 By: vincent Category: News

I’m not one for hunting, but it looks like New Jersey’s Devin Harris is, because he’s killing the hawks this year (which I believe is illegal!). On November 14th Harris unloaded on Atlanta for 30-6-8, while shooting 8/17 with a couple of steals, only to be followed up the next night against the Hawks with a 33-3-10 performance with two more steals. It isn’t bad enough for those bird lovers that Harris is putting up an average of 31.5 ppg against them so far this season, but he is getting his friends involved with his 9 assists per game.

Come to think of it, Harris has come into a bit of a hot streak over the last 3 games, averaging 33.6pts, 6.7 assist, 2 steals, and only ONE turnover/game (6.7:1 Assist/Turnover!?)! And these aren’t shit teams that he is doing this to; Detroit had not lost a game yet (although they were still getting used to AI, but still…), and Atlanta was 6-1 for the season.

The D-League Draft: Yes, There Really Is One!

November 08, 2008 By: andrew Category: D-League, Draft

In case you don’t eat, sleep, and breathe sports (perhaps, you have a family, or a real job, or something silly like that), you may not know much about the NBA Development League. Well, it’s a good thing you know us. The D-League Draft is one of the most underappreciated events on the sports calendar, but the way we see it, if these guys are good enough to be drafted into the NBA’s minor league, they deserve a little recognition. After all, with all the injuries the NBA ballers suffer throughout the course of an 82 game season, it’s only a matter of time before some of these guys get called up to the Association.

For last year’s edition, click here.

The 2008 NBA Development League Draft: Top Ten Picks

1. Tulsa: Chris Richard (PF) - Not to be confused with the former Baltimore Oriole of the same name, Richard is a two-time National Champion, having won back-to-back titles with the Florida Gators during the ‘05-’06 and ‘06-’07 seasons. Stuck on the bench behind star big men Joakim Noah and Al Horford, Richard made the most of his minutes by winning SEC Sixth Man of the Year honors his senior season. Played in 52 games last season for the Timberwolves. Also played in 6 D-League games with Sioux Falls, averaging a double-double (10.2 ppg, 11.5 rpg)

2. Colorado: James Mays (PF) - Former Clemson Tiger originally declared for the NBA Draft after his junior season, but withdrew his name from consideration prior to draft day. He returned to school, but his numbers dropped, resulting in him not being drafted at all this past summer. Went to training camp with Denver, but was cut. Hopefully, his belongings are still in Colorado.

3. Idaho: Jermareo Davidson (PF) - The run on power forwards continued, as Idaho selected the former Crimson Tide star third overall. Spent part of last season with the Charlotte Bobcats, who acquired him in the Jason Richardson/Brandan Wright trade from Golden State, who had drafted him in the second round. Played in 38 games with the Bobcats, including a pair of starts. Also played in 6 games for Sioux Falls of the D-League last year.

4. Sioux Falls: Gary Forbes (SF) - Could be listed as a power forward, but we’ve seen enough power forwards already, so consider for the purposes of this article, consider him a SF. In truth, he projects as a 3 rather than a 4 if he does make it to the NBA, being a bit undersized (6′7″) to bang down low with players like Garnett, Duncan, Boozer, etc. Played for Virginia for two years before transferring to UMass, where he made quite an impact. In addition to being named A-10 Player of the Year last season and leading the Minutemen to the NIT Championship Game, Forbes is only the second player in UMass history to score over 1,000 points in just two seasons, along with the legendary Julius Erving.

5. Bakersfield: Derrick Byars (SF) - Like Forbes, Byars started his collegiate career at Virginia before transferring elsewhere (Forbes and Byars were actually Cavalier teammates during the ’03-’04 season.) After two years, Byars left to play at Vanderbilt, where he blossomed into a star. Named SEC Player of the Year as a senior (’06-’07) and led the Commodores to the Sweet 16. The Trail Blazers drafted him in the second round before dealing him to the 76ers; however, he did not make the team and spent last season in Europe, spending time in both Germany and France.

6. Fort Wayne: Coleman Collins (PF) - Collins spent last season playing in Germany. The former Virginia Tech Hokie then played for the Raptors Summer League team and went to training camp with the Suns this fall.

7. Erie: Erik Daniels (SF) - Daniels is another ‘tweener’, a player who is stuck somewhere between a 3 and a 4. Played the 4 at Kentucky, but, like Forbes, does not have the size to bang down low with the premier power forwards in the NBA. Briefly played for Sacramento in the ‘04-’05 season. Also spent time in Europe, playing in both Italy and Spain over the past two seasons. This marks the third time in four years he was drafted by a D-League team.

8. Anaheim: Tierre Brown (PG) - Old by D-League standards (he’ll turn 30 next year), Brown put up back-to-back 20 ppg seasons at McNeese State, but graduated in 2001. Since then, he has played for the Rockets, Cavaliers, Hornets, and Lakers in the NBA, as well as spending time in Italy. However, it was in the D-League that Brown really made some noise, being named MVP for the ‘03-’04 season.

9. Utah: Denham Brown (SG) - Brown should be one of the better known players picked in this year’s draft, having played for UConn from ‘02-’06, including being on the 2004 team that won the National Championship behind stars Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon. Brown might also be known for scoring a mind-blowing 111 points in one high school game as a senior, or for hitting a buzzer-beater in the Elite Eight to force overtime against George Mason during the 2006 NCAA Tournament. Drafted in the second round by the late Seattle SuperSonics (rest in peace), Brown was waived and selected in that year’s D-League Draft by Tulsa. He has also played in Turkey and Italy.

10. Reno: Antonio Meeking (PF) - Former Louisiana Tech star led his team in rebounding three straight seasons. Named First-Team All-WAC as a senior before embarking on a journey as a basketball nomad. Has played in the USBL, the PBL, Serbia, Germany, Israel, Italy, and, of course, the D-League.

The in-depth coverage was limited to the top ten picks. The draft in its entirety can be viewed here, thanks to the NBA’s official D-League website.

And The Answer Is…Traded

November 06, 2008 By: andrew Category: Nuggets, Pistons, Trades

In case you missed it, Allen Iverson is headed back to the Eastern Conference. The Nuggets traded Iverson to the Detroit Pistons on Monday, in return for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb.

Iverson, the 2001 NBA MVP, was traded for the second time in three seasons. During the 2006-07 campaign, the Nuggets acquired him from Philadelphia in a deal for Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and two first round draft picks. Although he may not be the same player who famously crossed up Michael Jordan a decade ago, A.I. still brings his trademark fire and intensity, as well as the third highest scoring average in NBA history, behind only a couple of guys named Jordan and Chamberlain.

This is actually the second time that the Pistons were involved in trade talks for Iverson. Back in 2000, Detroit and Philadelphia agreed on a deal that would have sent A.I. to Motown in a four-way deal. However, the deal was nixed by, of all people, former Sixers center Matt Geiger. Geiger’s contract had a clause calling for him to receive a $5 million bonus if he was traded. Geiger, predictably, refused to forfeit this bonus, and so the blockbuster trade never happened. It turned out to be a good thing for Philadelphia, as Iverson had his finest season in 2000-2001, leading the team to the conference’s best record and the NBA Finals, as well as winning that season’s MVP award.

This is a homecoming for Billups, as he grew up in Denver and went to college at the University of Colorado. This will be Billups’ second stint with the Nuggets. Chauncey previously played for the team from 1998-1999. He also played for the Celtics, the Raptors, and the Timberwolves before signing with Detroit in 2002. This is the fourth time Billups has been traded in his career, more than any other NBA Finals MVP in history. Also, this is the first time that a former Finals MVP has been traded for a former league MVP since the 1985 trade that brought Bill Walton to the Celtics for Cedric Maxwell.

Like Billups, McDyess has also played for Denver before. Although he was drafted by the Clippers, McDyess spent his first two seasons in Denver. After a year in Phoenix, he returned to the Nuggets, where he had his best seasons, including his only All-Star invitation in 2001. Following an unsuccessful stop in New York and a brief return to Phoenix (both stints plagued by injuries), McDyess spent the past four seasons as a member of the Pistons, helping the team reach the Eastern Conference Finals each of his four seasons in Detroit, including a trip to the NBA Finals his first year in Motown.

The final part of the deal, Samb has played in only 4 NBA games and is not expected to have an immediate impact for the Nuggets.

So what does all this mean? For the Nuggets, the trade brings them a ‘true’ point guard, one who will set up his teammates rather than look for his own shot, as Iverson has a reputation of doing. Billups also improves the Nuggets defense, which has long been their weak spot. Finally, shedding Iverson’s salary was important because before the trade, Denver was over the salary cap limit, meaning they would have had to pay a luxury tax. As for the Pistons, after losing in the Conference Finals three straight seasons, Iverson might be just what they need to get them over that hump and back to the Finals. He also gives the team a true #1 scoring threat, which they haven’t had since they dealt Jerry Stackhouse to the Wizards for Richard Hamilton in 2002, back when a certain Washington executive was apparently trying to acquire every former Tar Heel in the league.

Finally, there has been a lot of talk about Detroit making this deal in order to clear cap space for 2010 (Iverson’s deal only runs through next season). Don’t be mislead. Pistons GM Joe Dumars has repeatedly shown that he doesn’t intend to win two or three years down the road, he intends to win now. Acquiring Iverson should go a long way in helping his team do just that. As for the Nuggets, don’t expect too much. The West, of course, is loaded, and this team is going to miss Marcus Camby no matter who is running the point. Detroit might not make it to the Finals, but at least they should get to the postseason with no problem. Denver might not even make it that far. Which would probably cost George Karl his job, but that’s another topic for another post.

How do you say 55 points in French?

November 05, 2008 By: chris Category: Cavs, Spurs, Suns

Tony Parker, that’s how.  A Ridiculous performance by the league’s favorite Frenchman.  55 pts, 10 ast and 7 reb.  Only Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson have had 55 and 10 before tonight.  Awesome night for TP.

UPDATE: Amare Stoudemire had 49 and Lebron had 41.  What’s gotten in to these youngsters tonight?!?!  Filthy Ridiculous.

Tell me your fantasy…

October 26, 2008 By: vincent Category: News

Alright, I’ve taken the liberty of starting up another fantasy league for this season (through Yahoo.com), and I am totally pumped about it this year. It’s been a long time since we have been able to turn back into stat-junkies, but I think it will end up being similar to riding a bike, only without the embarrassment of falling when you try to bunny-hop up the curb with a bunch of girls watching.

If you want to get in on the league, the league name is “Hoop and Harm Pt.Deux” (ID#130381) and the password is hoopandharm. We are going points only this year, and the stats and point system we will be using is:

  • FGA (-.45)
  • FGM (1)
  • FTA (-.75)
  • FTM (1)
  • 3PTA (-1)
  • 3PTM (1.5)
  • PTS (1)
  • OREB (1.5)
  • DREB (1)
  • AST (2)
  • ST (3)
  • BLK (3)
  • TO (-2)
  • TECH (-3)
  • FF (-5)

Roster positions for the league are: PG, SG, G, SF, PF, F, C, C, Util, Util, BN, BN, BN, so rank accordingly. The draft is going to be with an Auto-Draft system on Wednesday, October 29th at Noon (Central Time), so make sure you have all of your players ranked, or else that Yahoo rankings will be used to pick your team. Scoring starts the following evening (Thursday, October 30th). I guess that is about it, jump on in if you are feeling like it!

Warriors, come out and play-ay!

July 14, 2008 By: vincent Category: Free Agency, Warriors

Alright, so I figured it was about time I introduce myself (considering the fact that this site has been up for quite a while now). I’m Vince, I like basketball, and I’ve recently taken up running. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get down to business.

So the Warriors have already lost two players and they have two more that are out on the market. Baron has gone across the state to LA, and Mickael Pietrus has decided to go across the country to test the waters in the Atlantic (huzzah for water that is warm enough to swim in!). With Monte Ellis, a quick and proven scorer, deciding to turn to free agency, and Andris Biedrins coming down with a severe Anderson Varejao complex (looking for 5 years and 50 mil?! Come on, let’s be realistic here…), they have a few decisions to make that will change the course of this team.
